With natural wicker, the outer skin of the rattan is peeled off, hand-sanded and rubbed. Originally, the term "natural" implied that the piece is left unpainted. Now, natural wicker is stained and sealed with a clear coat of varnish or lacquer. This is done in order to increase the durability of the wicker.
Nowadays, craftsmanship passed down through the years combines with modern technology in order to offer wicker and rattan furniture with superior qualities.
Natural wicker can undergo a 3 bath process. During this intricate process, the frames are dipped in a polyester finish to seal every pour.
The first dip occurs after the weaving process. Then the wicker is dipped in a polyester emulsion to form a flexible coating for moisture resistance. Once that coat has dried, then the frames are dipped once again in polyester.
Advanced technology eliminates burrs, cracking, and peeling wicker. This is why wicker should undergo coatings offering some type of resistance to the conditions to which it will be susceptible.
The open weave of the wicker prevents it from retaining heat, even after long hours in the sun. The wicker has a natural "give" for total body comfort.
