Pine is a tree that nearly all of us recognize. Pine could be any of about 90 species of evergreen that are found mainly in the temperate regions of the Northern hemisphere. These trees are very versatile as to where they choose to live. They are found as low as sea level, but can also grow in altitudes of up to 13,000 feet.
Pine trees do require sunlight, but they can fare well with minimal water. Most species of pine have a rough, thick bark. Pine is a tree that nearly all of us recognize. The pines are classified into 2 different groups. The first is softwood, or soft pine. This includes white, sugar, bristle cone and pinyon pine trees. These have softer timber, and leaves in bundles of five. The second group is the hard pines, whose leaves are found in groups of 2 or 3. The wood of these pines tends to be harder, and have a closer grain than the softwood pines. Some more well known hardwood pines are the lodgepole, longleaf, and ponderosa pine trees.
The Rocky Mountains house some of the oldest living things on this planet. There are pine trees that are estimated at an age of over 5000 years old.
The pine family is viewed as an important natural resource. This is because pine is not only used as timber and pulpwood, but it is also a source for turpentine, oils and wood tars. Materials such as charcoal, lampblack, and fuel gases are distillation by-products.
 As Outdoor Furniture
Used in outdoor furniture, white pine is very weather resistant, and can last many decades without rotting. Pine should however, have a protective finish in order to ensure its durability. A finish on the pine will also prevent discoloration.
